UCI WorldTeam
Headed by Jonathan Vaughters and founded in 2003, the American team has been built with a solid ethos of anti-doping. Taking a different approach than Team Sky/INEOS attempted, the team agreed to hire riders who had previously doped if they agreed to be entirely truthful to Vaughters about any past discrepancies, with the promise they would never be pressured to dope in his team.
The team has gone through various incarnations while always maintaining their ‘cool dude’ brand. Known as Garmin-Transitions in 2010, the team merged with Cervélo the following year, becoming a superteam fronted by GCN presenter Daniel Lloyd, although he didn’t win any races (despite what he may claim).
Current title sponsor EF Education rescued the team in the summer of 2018 when their existence was hanging by a thread. In 2019 the team captured the hearts of the wider cycling community through their 'Alternative Racing Calendar' and in 2021 the remarkable Aussie, Lachlan Morton, completed his bonkers ‘Alternative Tour’, raising hundreds of thousands for World Bicycle Relief in the process.
In 2024, the team will be ushering in a new crop of talented riders, including Darren Rafferty and Markel Beloki, while Richard Carapaz and Neilson Powless return to head the team's biggest ambitions at the Classics and the Tour de France.
