Barcelona is one of the most famous cities in Europe, with countless attractions and landmarks. It also is a city with a vibrant cycling culture, spanning all the way from professional road riding to fixed gear racing and riding.

For a recent GCN+ documentary, a fixed-gear racer, Alec Briggs, and a former professional road racer, Juan Antonio Flecha, squared up for a friendly competition. Around the streets of the Catalan city, the two riders explore the sights and sounds of Barcelona, as well as race for the key points on a cycling scavenger hunt, in Checkpoint: Barcelona.

The rules of the game are simple. Each rider is armed with a polaroid camera, a paper map and a bike. They have just two hours on the clock to race against each other and reach as many sightseeing checkpoints as possible in the centre of the city. The differences are Alec is on board a fixed-gear commuter bike, while Juan Antonio is on a geared gravel rig.

In a nail-biting game of strategy, speed, and city savviness, whose riding style is best suited to the bustling streets of the Catalonian Capital? Who can keep their cool when the pressure is on? Will Juan Antonio’s local knowledge outweigh Alec’s urban riding ability?
